Volunteering goodness

Ekk! I havent updated the ole' blog for a while. Truth is, life has been a bit hectic. Not much of an excuse though.

Anywho - here's my latest update....
So far, my longest run has been 14 miles. I have a 16 miler coming up this Saturday which I'm not looking forward to. However - it's been much easier training with a team and coach. On our long runs there are staff from the charity camped out at different locations along the way with water, energy drinks and food. Saves having to lug all that stuff around in my bum bag. Yes....I have a bum bag. Its small, but nonetheless can be classified as an official bag for the bum. BTW for those in the U.S., bum bag = fanny pack and in the UK, fanny = vagina. So I will continue to call it a bum bag. Thanks.

Anywho, if anyone would like me to send them the training schedules I am sticking to - more than happy to do so. We will total out about 6 months of training and the schedules are really easy to follow! - day by day/month to month. You only end up doing one 20 mile run before the big finale - otherwise you gradually build up but never past 20. I hear the last 6 miles is pure adrenaline. We'll see...

On other news, I've been doing quite a bit of volunteering to raise money. I volunteered at a water stand during a local half marathon. I made $125 for my efforts - which is not too shabby for a couple of hours of handing out cups of water. This past weekend, I volunteered at an Austin festival called the Pecan Street Festival. I was designated as a Recycling team member. The volunteer coordinator asked that I go around every trash can at the festival and pick out anything that can be recycled or made in to compost.....yes, im not joking - even food. Clearly I did not follow through on picking apart the bins in the hope of finding a nice chicken bone to throw on the compost. Regardless, it was quite a fun weekend - lots of people watching. Best bit was the festivals choice of planting the "PORK-The other white meat" booth next to the green/environ awareness booths. Good news group of folks that helped me out volunteering made about $400!!!

More to come....

Capitol 10K

Here's a pic of me in action at the Texas Capitol 10K a couple of weeks back. Yeah....I take a really glamorous photo. Not so much.

I completed the 10k in just over an hour. I'm hoping to do the Seattle marathon in 4hr30mins....a bit of a challenge so need to step it up now! Running 12 miles this weekend. Yikes!

Fundraising Recommitment Achieved!

Hooray, thanks to the kind support of all my lovely friends and family, I made it it to what Team in Training like to call "recommitment"! This means I have enough funds in my fundraising bank to officially be entered in to the Seattle marathon on June 27th! I'll also be eligible to continue the fundraising efforts to hit the $4100 mark and beyond!

Now we just need to work on getting Patrick in the same place by March 25th......

Stay tuned!

Seattle course announced!

The Seattle Rock n' Roll marathon course was announced last week.

Here's what is in store for us! Looks like we will have a lovely view of Lake Washington for a good 5 mile stretch of the marathon. Hopefully that'll keep our minds off the actual running.

Wish us luck!

6.2 miles. Success!

Patrick and I ran 6.2 miles this morning! Patrick decided we needed some music to keep us going but apparently head phones are a marathon runner faux pas. His solution - he strapped a small portable speaker to an ipod and cranked the volume up. We might as well of had a boom box on our shoulder. None the less, we conquered the desired mileage despite a spattering of rain and a couple of unexpected hills.

Heading out to do a little guerilla marketing/fund raising this afternoon. I need to get my game face on....

Thanks to all have donated this week!

And so it begins...

Welcome to 26.2 miles to go!
By now you will have gathered that Patrick and I are running a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

We started training about 3 weeks ago. So far so good, although we'll have to report back following our scheduled 6 mile run with the Team in Training group. Yikes!

Fund raising, on the other hand, began about 2 days ago. Suddenly 26.2 miles of hard core running seems easy in comparison. You'd be surprised how hard raising money for a great cause is! However, thanks to all those who have donated thus far. We will notify each and every one of you about various fund raising raffles, auctions, happy hours etc that are in the pipeline for the upcoming months.

The first happy hour raffle is tentatively scheduled for beginning/mid March. We'll have lots of donated gift certificates, prizes so check back for an official date and time on that one!

If anyone has any additional fund raising ideas or prizes from your business you'd like to donate for the raffle - please post!!
